小笠原諸島の概要
小笠原諸島は東京から約1000kmの広大な海域に大小30余りの島々が散在しています。オセアニアの流れを汲むユニークな踊りや、この島でしか見られない固有の生き物など、自然が豊富な島です。
小笠原諸島の見どころ・観光
自然
海洋プレートの沈み込みが始まって間もない時期にのみ発生する特殊な安山岩「ボニナイト」や、 石灰岩が侵食や風化を受けてできた「カルスト地形」を見ることができます。また、人工的な光の影響を殆ど受けない小笠原では、スターウォッチングも人気です。
動物・植物
多くの固有種が生息・生育しており、アホウドリ類などの絶滅危惧種を見ることもできます。周辺には数多くのイルカやクジラなどが生息しており、日本最大のアオウミガメの産卵地として有名です。

小笠原諸島の歴史
約4600万年前に形成された海洋性島弧で、16世紀頃から人間が定住を始めたといわれています。農業は、亜熱帯性気候を生かした果樹や野菜の栽培、 漁業はカツオやマグロ漁などが行われ、大正時代には人口7千人を超えていました。
戦後は占領軍の統治下に置かれ、島民の帰島は許されませんでした。 全ての島民の帰島が許されたのは、昭和43年です。
